🏠 Renovation & New Build Guide

Renovating or Building?
Read This First.

The single biggest mistake Sydney homeowners make with C-Bus and Dynalite is engaging a lighting control specialist too late. Once the walls are plastered and the cables are run, your options shrink dramatically. Here's what to know — and when to call us.

When to Engage a Lighting Control Specialist

The earlier you engage us, the better your outcome and the lower your total cost. Here's the ideal timeline:

1

Design Stage

Before plans are finalised. We advise on cable routes, conduit sizing, panel location, and zone layout. Getting this right now costs nothing extra. Getting it wrong costs thousands in rectification.

2

Before First Fix

Before your electrician runs cables. We provide a lighting control specification so they pull the right cable to the right locations. C-Bus requires specific cable — not standard electrical wire.

3

Commissioning

Once hardware is installed, we commission and program the system. This is where scenes, schedules, and integrations are set up. Budget 1–2 days depending on system size.

The most expensive call we get: "The builder finished last week and we want to add C-Bus now." Retrofitting a lighting control system into a completed home costs 3–5x more than designing it in from the start.

What to Ask Your Builder and Electrician

These are the questions that separate a smooth C-Bus installation from an expensive headache:

"Are you running C-Bus cable or standard electrical cable?"

C-Bus requires its own dedicated cable — Clipsal 5100series or equivalent. Standard electrical cable won't work. If your electrician doesn't know this, call us before they start.

"Where is the C-Bus panel going and how big is it?"

The switchboard needs to be sized to accommodate C-Bus DIN units. A panel that's too small is a common problem in renovations where C-Bus is an afterthought. We can advise on sizing before the board is built.

"Who is commissioning and programming the system?"

Installing C-Bus hardware and programming C-Bus are two different skill sets. Many electricians can install the hardware but aren't accredited to program it. Confirm upfront who is doing the commissioning and check their accreditation.

"Can this system integrate with my blinds, HVAC, and security?"

Modern C-Bus and Dynalite systems can control or integrate with motorised blinds, air conditioning, security systems, and entertainment. If integration is important to you, it needs to be designed in — not bolted on later.

What We Do on New Builds & Renovations

📄 Design & Specification

We produce a full lighting control specification for your electrician — cable schedule, zone map, panel layout, and hardware list. Takes the guesswork out of the install.

🔐 Commissioning

Accredited C-Bus and Dynalite commissioning once hardware is installed. We set up every scene, schedule, and integration to your brief.

👥 Handover & Training

We walk you through your system at handover so you actually know how to use it. We also provide project files so any future programmer can pick up where we left off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add C-Bus to an existing home without a full renovation?
It depends on the home. In some cases we can retrofit C-Bus using existing cable infrastructure. In others, new cable is essential. We can assess your home and give you an honest answer before you commit to anything.
How much does C-Bus add to a new build?
It varies enormously by system size and complexity. A basic C-Bus installation in a 4-bedroom home typically starts around $15,000–$25,000 installed and programmed. Dynalite for a similar home is comparable. Call us for a realistic budget figure for your project.
Does my electrician need to be C-Bus accredited?
Your electrician needs to be a licensed electrician to install the hardware, but does not need to be C-Bus accredited. The programming and commissioning must be done by an accredited C-Bus programmer — that's us.
How long does commissioning take?
For a standard 4–5 bedroom home, commissioning typically takes 1–2 full days. Larger homes or complex integrations may take longer. We'll give you a time estimate once we've seen the scope.
